This is an extremely handsome variation on what has come to be known as the Gibson A-1 mandolin. Our opinion is that it sounds a bit like a Gibson A or A mandolin from the s. This was a Late Depression attempt by Gibson to rekindle interest in a musical instrument which, at that time, was fading daily from the forefront of musical tastes.

The electric archtop guitar was warming up at this time — more and more embraced by jazz, rockabilly and rhythm and blues players. The mandolin was becoming forgotten and this model was sent by the Gibson admin to get people excited, just like they did the top tension Mastertone banjo, and the first cutaway acoustic archtops and the first blonde acoustic archtops — all this same year, This thrilling revenant from yesteryear would please any mandolin player or collector, and help, in a small but meaningful way, to make his or her life complete.

On the phone, that first 3 looks like it could be an 8, there's almost a shadow of the rest of the 8. So now I'm not sure again. Oh well.

I'm always confused when it comes to computers and this is no exception. Clearly, I'm obviously not a pro at Photoshop tinkering. A pro probably would have had those numbers deciphered fairly quickly. Anyway, as to why the colors changed, I was playing around with the Channel Mixer and also separate adjustments to individual RGB channels in Levels as well as Curves, and probably some other menu items I don't even remember, I just kept clicking stuff and moving sliders around until I could see the numbers better, my usual "monkeys at the typewriter" technique.

That's about what I paid for my in slightly less spiffy condition and without pickguard and case five years ago. And I thought I was getting a pretty good deal.

Now I'm not so sure. Oh, I'm very happy with it, and I was glad to get it at the time with very little bidding up. Just sayin' that good deals can be had, and you can get an idea what they are by putting some time into watching the market. But that's just my opinion. I could be wrong.

This is an A-1, also, so a cosmetic upgrade from and A. Re: Value of a Gibson A Mandolin vintage. Originally Posted by journeybear. I saw the big feeding frenzy that was going on for vintage instruments myself. I had have? I can't afford to play with the big boys like Stan Jay, Eric Schoenberg or Banana so I stocked up on old vintage guitars, I have a bunch of old rosewood parlors, and old mandolins that are all clearly less than collectable but I think are potentially good players.

I have instruments tucked away in every spot I can find. I am a woodworker so I didn't have to do too much to set up for repairing instruments, which is to say it actually was a lot but not so much as if I had to start from scratch.Unit arrived very promptly and well packed for shipment.
